LOCATION: Toledo, Ohio
DIRECTIONS: To reach Oak Openings Preserve Metropark
drive west from Toledo on State Route 2. Approximately 10 miles west of 1-475 on
SR 2 turn south on Girdham Road. Girdharn Road leads through the heart of the park.
To reach Irwin Prairie State Nature Preserve, drive approximately 3.5 miles west
of 1-475 on State Route 2 to Crissey Road. Turn right (north) on Crissey and drive
3.5 miles to Brancroft Street. Turn left (west) on Bancroft and drive 1.4 miles to
the Irwin Prairie parking lot on the south side of Bancroft Road and a quarter-mile
west of Irwin Road.
HOURS: Open year-round.
BEST TIMES: May and June.
BIRDING HIGHLIGHTS: The unique landscape and diversity of habitat
found in the Oak Openings supports and shelters a extraordinary variety of breeding
birds including many rare to the area. Nineteen species ofwarblers, six species of
vireos, a wide variety of other songbirds, woodpeckers, owls, sparrows and marsh
birds are among the more than 100 species that nest in the area.
