About the Light:
|
|
The threat of the Southeast Shoal grew with the increase
of lake shipping prior to the 1900's. Southeast Shoal, however, was in Canadian waters
and the government there did not see fit to locate a light in that area. The United
States Lighthouse Board, on the other hand, said that the site was in Canadian waters
and not their problem. As a compromise, the Lake Carriers Association chartered this
lightship to guard the shoal. On June 5th, 1910, the private lightship was replaced
by a Canadian government vessle. Today a "heli-pad type" light is in this
place. |
