About the Light:

A need for an additional navigation aid caused the construction of this light in 1872 as a supplement to the inner harbor light. It performed that task until 1958 when the 600 foot oreboat FRONTENAC smacked into the structure while attempting to turn. The impact knocked the entire lighthouse off its foundation and gave it a 16 degree lean! Three years later a modern steel "skeleton" light replaced the now famous "leaning lighthouse of Buffalo" and shorty thereafter the original structure was torn down.
